Hello! Our new craft for June was felt. While we’ve both used felt before for past projects, it’s never too late to practice new techniques and work on improving skills we’ve already learned. So that’s what we did!

We had so much fun designing with felt that we are going to extend our month into two! I’m going to go first by sharing my felt super hero mobile I created during the month of June. Stay tuned next month to read about Maghan’s felt project.

Here’s a quick Q&A of Katie’s felt adventure:

Why did you decide to do this craft/skill?
I recently became an aunt for the first time and had the idea of creating a mobile for my nephew’s nursery. The theme of his nursery is super heroes and so I wanted that to be the focus. I just knew that felt would be the perfect material to use in creating the little masked animals for it. I was excited to get started!

What did you want to get out of this project?
I’ve used felt in the past for other projects but this would be the first time I’d be using my Cricut Maker to cut out the pieces. After the pieces were matched up I blanket stitched them together and then embroider details onto it. I wanted to finish the project having had some experience with creating my own .svg files for the Cricut and creating characters from those pieces as I layered them on top of each other. This would also be my first mobile, so learning how to design the look of it as a whole was also fun.

Did you enjoy the process?
I sure did. I began by searching for materials at the Benzie Design shop – from there it all came together in my head quite quickly. I found the color palette I wanted along with coordinating DMC Embroidery Floss and even adorable felted clouds, stars and balls. I created the .svg files using artwork from the baby shower I had helped put together and was so happy to successfully cut the many pieces I needed using the Cricut Maker. What a game changer that magical machine is! I learned so much from that process as well. Once I had all my felt pieces cut, I spent night after night creating little super heroes. Lots of stitches and stuffing happening! After that, it just came down to stringing the mobile together.

Would you do it again?
Oh yes. Felt is a wonderful material with so many possibilities. Combine that with the Cricut Maker and embroidery and it’s a crafter’s dream team.

Happy crafting, friends!
